The St. Peter Cemetery is located on Spruill Avenue near the entrance to the former Charleston Naval Base. The original purpose of this cemetery was to provide an appropriate burial site for African-American Catholics and members of their immediate families.

The Cemetery is presently associated with St. Patrick Catholic Church, thus acquiring the name, of St. Peter/St. Patrick Cemetery.

Since 1992, the records have been housed in the office of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Maintenance is under the direction of the church and the Cemetery Association.

Burial on these grounds is open to Catholics and members of their immediate families and certain other persons as defined in the constitution, namely: parishioners, non-­parishioners, and non-Catholics.

Cemetery Committee

The Cemetery Committee consists of volunteer members of the Parish of St. Patrick and Our Lady of Mercy.  The committee meets monthly.  The main objective of this committee is to ensure that the burial activities for all bereaved families are managed in a respectable manner in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Diocese.  This will be accomplished in the following ways:

• To provide the participating funeral homes with the guidelines and policies of the Church.
• To ensure that the Diocese receive payment for the service rendered to the deceased.
• To monitor the cemetery grounds to ensure proper maintenance is provided.
• To inform Parishoners of current policies and fees.

Bereavement Ministry

The Bereavement Ministry consists of volunteer members of the parish.  The Committee supports the Cemetery Committee in the following ways:

• To assist the Pastor with arranging the burial services
• To support the family with transportation of other family members to and from the airport, train station, etc.
• To provide trays/meals to the family on the day of the funeral.
• To provide support throughout the first year and beyond asneeded by calls, cards, visits, etc.
• To organize a Memorial Mass in November for all of the deceased members of the year.
