Abstract

Personal and professional papers, including publications, manuscripts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, dissertations, and photographs, compiled by David Heisser, author and historian.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection documents the research compiled by David Heisser, who was an author, historian, and librarian, during his career from the 1960s until 2010.  It also contains some of Heisser’s personal materials, including records of his education, family, and death.

Papers throughout the collection mainly relate to Patrick N. Lynch, third bishop of Charleston, South Carolina. They include photocopies of Lynch’s correspondence, family and genealogical material, and writings and lectures given by Lynch, such as his pamphlet on slavery written in German, French, and Italian. The material regarding Lynch extends from his hometown in Ireland to South Carolina and spans from the 1820s until Lynch’s death in 1882.  It also includes writings about Lynch authored by other historians.  Other topics in which Heisser conducted research include Irish Catholics; black Catholics; Bishop John England; biographies of various bishops and clergy during Lynch’s lifetime; Civil War; writings about councils in which Lynch was a participant; slavery; religion; and science.  Additional materials include articles written by Heisser on seals and emblems and topics related to library and information science.  The collection records are largely textual, comprising correspondence, clippings, publications, and related printed matter.  Other formats include photographs and some negatives.
