Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Office of the Chancery records includes administrative records, bookkeeping records, newspaper clippings, photographs, and correspondence regarding advisory boards and committees, education, financial transactions, and the permanent diaconate, from 1854-2004.  The advisory boards and committees' material include the ad hoc committee on sexual misconduct, a committee created to develop policies regarding matters of conscience and discipline.  The education series includes histories of schools, together with photographs, programs, newspaper articles, and yearbooks.  The financial records series contains bookkeeping records, including receipts and expenditures, and collections for various accounts, such as Peter's Pence.  Material regarding the Office of the Permanent Diaconate includes correspondence and publications.

Collection Historical Note

The Diocese of Charleston, the episcopal see for the Roman Catholic Church in South Carolina, was established in 1820 as the sixth diocese in the country. It originally encompassed 142,000 square miles and extended over three states: North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.  Today the diocese comprises the entire state of South Carolina, with the majority of administrative offices, also known collectively as the chancery, located in Charleston.

The Office of the Chancery records are a collection of administrative material that accumulated in the chancery building attic over time.
