Scope and Contents of the Materials

The bulk of the collection includes ephemera such as pamphlets from parish jubilees, or cards from priest ordinations or jubilees.  However, the remainder of the collection contains substantive materials such as reports of school superintendent, center for human development, various synods, and unpublished parish histories.

The highlights of the collection include the unpublished parish histories and the imagery offered by the holy cards for various priests.  They may prove useful in identifying priests for whom there are few records.

Collection Historical Note

John Fleming McManus was born 16 December 1924 in Aberdeen, N.C., to Bernard A. McManus and Glenn Fleming.  He attended Cathedral School and Bishop England High School in Charleston and St. Charles College, Catholic University of America, St. Mary's Seminary (Baltimore), and Theological College (Washington DC).

Bishop Emmet M. Walsh ordained McManus on 21 June 1947 at Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Charleston).  His pastoral assignments included teh following.

Diocesan offices:

Faculty, Bishop England High School, 1947-1953; Asst. Superintendent, Diocesan Schools, 1952-1957; Superintendent, Diocesan Schools, 1957-1968; Cemeteries, 1980.

Associate assignments:

Stella Maris (Sullivans Island), 1947-1952; St. John (North Charleston), 1952-1954


St. Mary (Yonges Island), 1954-1959; St. Patrick (Charleston), 1959-1966; St. Joseph (Charleston), 1966-1972; St. Paul (Spartanburg), 1972-1974; St. Andrew (Myrtle Beach), 1974-1978; Cathedral, 1978-1982

St. Joseph (Charleston), 1982-1983; Blessed Sacrament (Charleston), 1983-1995.

Msgr. McManus died 7 Jan. 2005.
