Collection Historical Note

Patrick Thomas Quinlan, a Roman Catholic priest and author, was born in 1894 in New Straitsville, Ohio, to Patrick Quinlan of Ireland and Nettie Blackwood of Ohio. Patrick T. Quinlan attended primary school in Glouster and Athens, Ohio; secondary school in Notre Dame, Indiana, and St. John University, Ohio; and collegiate school at St. Thomas in Hartford, Connecticut, and St. John University.  He also attended the seminaries of St. Bernard in Rochester, New York, and American College in Louvain, Belgium.

Bishop Theophile Meerscheart ordained Quinlan to the priesthood for the Diocese of Hartford in Connecticut in 1922 at Louvain, Belgium.

Pastoral appointments with the Diocese of Hartford include the following:  Holy Rosary and St. Raphael parishes, Bridgeport, 1922-1930, St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, 1930-1939, Sacred Heart Parish, Wethersfield, 1939, St. Joseph Parish, Bookfield, 1940-1942. Quinlan was also the Rural Life Director of the Diocese of Hartford and served as treasurer and vice president of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference. He also worked with the Home Missioners of America in Glendale, Ohio, from 1945-1947. Much of his writing is on the subject of rural life, farms and farmers, and Catholicism in rural areas.

Quinlan was incardinated to the Diocese of Charleston in 1947.  His pastoral assignments included St. Ann Mission Parish in Kingstree, South Carolina, from 1947-1953 and Our Lady of Fatima Catechumenate in Kingstree, South Carolina, from 1953-1971.

Father Quinlan was largely responsible for the establishment of Catholicism in Williamsburg County, a rural area of South Carolina, after the Second World War.  He wrote a number of texts used for teaching catechism.

Patrick Quinlan died in 1971. He’s buried at St. Stanislaus Chapel in Williamsburg, South Carolina.
