The Office of Catechesis and Christian Initiation provides oversight of and resources for comprehensive faith formation in the Catholic Diocese of Charleston. Ranging from pre-kindergarten age through adults, people in parishes and schools throughout the state of South Carolina are touched by the religious education programs supported by this office. The office provides guidelines for the R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), focusing on those preparing for initiation into the Catholic faith; sets standards for sacramental preparation programs, particularly the sacraments of Penance (Reconciliation), Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation; provides curriculum guidelines for parish and school religious education; and offers, on the diocesan or deanery level, training and continuing education for catechists, directors of religious education, and other parish personnel. The office is staffed by the Director, Sister Pamela Smith, SS.C.M., Ph.D., and the Administrative Assistant, Cathy Roche, who also works for the Office of the Diaconate.
