Intergenerational Faith Formation

As many ethnic groups know, very often the one who imparts an affection for the faith is the baba, the nonna, the abuela, the grandma. Catholic teaching regards the family as “the domestic Church” and acknowledges that parents are the primary educators of children and youth. Thus, faith formation is clearly a family affair. In the diocese it is not only the family of one’s birth but also the parish family that becomes involved in faith formation, with many retirees as well as many parents involved in parish religious education programs, summer Bible camp or school, youth ministry, and retreats. There is a growing movement for religious education to be more deliberate about presenting cross-generational opportunities and occasions for faith development. Expect this to be a growing trend across the diocese and across the United States.
