The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is one of the many downtown churches that give Charleston its nickname of 'The Holy City.'  The Church is a magnificent structure, a grand monument to the faith of thousands, past and present.  The Cathedral is the See Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston.

On April 14, 1907, The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist opened its doors at it's current location on Broad Street.  Because of a shortage of funds, the cathedral was not completed.  The continuing tower and steeple were never built and the clock and bells were never installed.

In the fall of 2008, we will begin completing the dream begun in 1890.  After years of fund-raising, we plan to restore the tool chiseled Connecticut brownstone, extend the tower, and add the steeple, cross and three bells.  The expected height will be 168 feet.
