Annual Appeal for the Church in Latin America

Dear Friends in Christ,

The past year of Jubilee provided us with an opportunity to celebrate and to reflect on the many aspects of our Church. Indeed, through the many activities throughout the Jubilee Year, we experienced the universal mission of our Church as well as our own local reality lived in parish life. And now, nourished by this experience, we are able to continue along the journey in renewed solidarity.

Many of us are involved in expressions of solidarity throughout the year through volunteering in parishes’ local organizations. There is, within our Catholic heritage, a tradition of reaching out to others in an attempt to foster hope and unity. In doing this locally, we also become aware of the needs of our brothers and sisters whom we do not know who live in different lands and speak a language other than English. Yet, the bond of solidarity makes them a part of our community and makes their needs our own.

The annual Collection for the Church in Latin America was instituted by the bishops of the United States to foster a sense of unity through solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Central and South America as well as in Mexico and the Caribbean. Soon, we will have in our parishes the opportunity to advance our acts of solidarity which echo throughout the hemisphere as we strive to become “One Church, One America.” As Catholics, we embrace the call for unity of the Church in America: North and South. I would ask that each one of us consider the importance of this effort and to contribute to providing assistance for the many pastoral needs of the Church in the hemisphere.

Please know of my gratitude for your generosity in this endeavor as we strive to live out in what our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has stated, “The greatest gift which America has received from the Lord is the faith which has forged its identity.”

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. Baker

Bishop of Charleston
