The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity – 2008
Dear Friends in Christ,
How blessed our parish is to have so many visitors who join us this Sunday
and every Sunday as we together offer due worship to the One God, who is
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Know that you are truly welcome here.
Today, the Church in her wisdom celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy
Trinity. We need Sundays such as this to remind us of the divinely-given
truths of our faith. The Blessed Trinity is often so familiar that we may
need to review exactly what we believe. At the end of St. Matthew’s Gospel
(28:19-20), Jesus says, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you.”
Notice how Jesus uses the singular, “in the Name of,” and then gives three
names, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Already from the mouth of the Lord
Himself we hear one God (Name – singular) in three Persons (Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit – plural).
Paragraph 44 from the Compendium to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
“The central mystery of Christian faith and life is the mystery of the Most
Blessed Trinity;” and §48, “The three divine Persons are only one God
because each of them equally possesses the fullness of the one and
indivisible divine nature. They are really distinct from each other by
reason of the relations which place them in correspondence to each other.
The Father generates the Son; the Son is generated by the Father; the Holy
Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son.”
In other news, congratulations to our young men and women who received Jesus
for the first time in Holy Communion last Saturday, May 10th! May we all
prepare our souls as well as they did every time we receive our Blessed Lord
in Holy Communion. May we live as true temples of God.
Next Sunday, May 25th, at the end of the 11:15am Mass, we will have a
Procession with the Most Blessed Sacrament as we celebrate Corpus Christi,
the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We plan this year
(weather-permitting) to process down the Broad Street sidewalk to the grassy
area beside the Cathedral where we will have Benediction. Don’t miss this
chance to adore our Lord truly present in the Blessed Sacrament and receive
His blessing at the end of the Procession.
Processions, such as the one next week, are an opportunity for us to give
outward expression to our faith. Too often we make our faith too subjective.
Too often, Jesus is rarely considered as we make daily, important decisions.
By doing this we slowly create a man-made faith, since by not including
divine revelation given by Jesus through His Church and guided by the Holy
Spirit, we end up (unwittingly perhaps) with a convenient religion, one that
reflects our personal opinions only, a religion that does not challenge us
to change and conform our lives to the Gospel. Such a “religion” does not
end with heaven, for who, then, becomes the object of our worship? We must
be constantly aware of this sinful tendency in our human nature, and instead
always turn ourselves to God, who is the real source of Truth, and who has
revealed this Truth to those who will accept it. Only by humbly accepting
His Truth out of sheer love for Him and doing His Will can we find the peace
in our souls that we are so desperately seeking. The Triune God is the
measure of all things, not ourselves.
Yours truly in Christ Jesus,
Father Wilson
“True revolution consists in simply turning to God who is the measure of
what is right and who at the same time is everlasting love.” – Pope Benedict
XVI

Dear Friends in Christ,
The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC), in partnership with our diocesan
communications office, has been the Church’s voice in the media: educating,
entertaining, inspiring, and informing the public about Gospel values. The
CCC plays an important role in our Church and in society. It is supported
solely through an annual parish collection that merits our continued
support.
This year’s collection date is May 18. Half of your contribution to the CCC
Collection stays right here to support our Official Internet site of the
Catholic Diocese of Charleston, the annual Diocesan Directory, award-winning
publications and an e-mail /fax network with all Catholic parishes in the
state.
The remaining 50% supports CCC’s national activities such as: *Audio
recordings of the daily readings from the New American Bible for on-line
listening or podcast download.
*The For Your Marriage campaign-television and radio Public Service
Announcements and a Web site designed to celebrate marriage and provide
resources and support for those living this vocation.
*The TV special, Picturing Mary, airing on many public television stations
since December 2006.
*Lenten radio retreats to enrich the spiritual journey of that season.
*The www.CatholicCommunicationsCampaign.org expansion of information on TV
and radio programs, streaming video, movie and TV reviews, interviews, and
inspiring stories of faith in action.
I invite you to visit our web site and to explore all the materials
available to you and your family. Your strong support will insure the
continued availablility of media resources that promote Gospel values and
foster the pastoral teachings of the Catholic Church (www.CatholicComminications
Campaign.org). I am grateful for your ongoing generosity.
Faithfully Yours in Christ,
Rev. Msgr. Martin T. Laughlin
