Pope Pius VII
The Catholic Diocese of Charleston comprises the entire state of South Carolina with Charleston as its See city. Founded in 1820 by Pope Pius VII , it is one of the oldest Catholic dioceses in the United States. The Diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Miscellany, is the successor to the United States Catholic Miscellany, the first national Catholic weekly newspaper, founded in 1822 by John England, the first bishop of Charleston.
