As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.  For their sake I consecrate myself.  Consecrate them in truth.”   John 17: 17-19

The Office of Vocations seeks to encourage and nurture the call to the priesthood and consecrated life for men and women by reaching out to those who may be receiving a call from the Holy Spirit.

Seminarians: There are currently 10 men in various stages of formation for the priesthood.  The diocese is charged with the responsibility of their education, which averages $25,000 per year per seminarian.  In 2007 the diocese ordained six new priests that are assigned to either local parishes or advanced studies in Rome.

Permanent Diaconate:  The Office of the Permanent Diaconate provides the necessary education, instruction and training needed to ordinate deacons to serve in the Diocese of Charleston.  There are currently 101 active ordained deacons serving in the diocese.

Continuing Formation:  The diocese currently has two recently ordained priests participating in advanced studies.  Funds raised through the Bishop's Stewardship Appeal help provide priests the opportunities to continue their formation through additional graduate courses and supplemental training.

Retired Priests   $100,000
As the primary spiritual leaders of parish communities, our priests deserve support in retirement. The diocese is currently providing monthly pensions to 30 retired priests.  The Bishop’s Stewardship Appeal along and the Priest Retirement Endowment support our priests in retirement.

Healthcare costs and the operation of St. Joseph's Residence remain a significant cost for our retired priests.  The residence provides 24-hour staffing, transportation, a registered nurse to assist with medical coordination and regular meals for all residents.
