Catholic Charities strives to continue the ministry of Jesus by providing quality service for people in need, advocating for justice, and calling the entire Church and all people to do the same.  Catholic Charities works to accomplish its goals through the provisions of direct services, consultation, education and advocacy.

  • Immigration services
  • Counseling services
  • Medical Missions to foreign countries
  • Crisis pregnancy support services
  • Technical, educational and networking services and assistance pertaining to affordable housing, homelessness, emergency shelters, food pantries, soup kitchens, statewide anti-hunger networks and environmental issue impacting poor areas
In addition to providing these basic core services, Catholic Charities offers specific programs and services designed to meet the unique needs of our communities throughout the state of South Carolina.
 
 
Vocations   $550,000
As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.  For their sake I consecrate myself.  Consecrate them in truth.”   John 17: 17-19

The Office of Vocations seeks to encourage and nurture the call to the priesthood and consecrated life for men and women by reaching out to those who may be receiving a call from the Holy Spirit. 

Seminarians: There are currently 15 men in various stages of formation for the priesthood.  The diocese is charged with the responsibility of their education, which cost $25,000 per year per seminarian.  In 2006 the diocese ordained 2 new priests and plan to ordain 7 men to the priesthood in 2007. 

Permanent Diaconate:  The Office of the Permanent Diaconate provides the necessary education, instruction and training needed to ordinate deacons to serve in the Diocese of Charleston.  There are currently 78 active ordained deacons serving in the diocese, and 24 men are currently in preparation. 
 
 
Youth & Education   $375,000
Catholic Youth Ministry: The Office of Youth Ministry provides education and training to assist parishes in developing comprehensive youth and young adult ministries.

Campus Ministry: There are currently eleven colleges and universities in South Carolina that have active campus ministry programs.  Campus ministry not only provides on campus Mass for students, they also engage in weekly scriptural study and partake in numerous community service and outreach programs.

Catholic School grants: The Office for Schools will offer grants to assist schools in the areas of tuition assistance, professional development, classroom grants, emergency funding and educational supplies and equipment.
 

Ministry & Outreach   $375,000
Providing direct funding and special service grants for:
  •  Multi-Ethnic ministries and programs
  •  Child Protection Services
  •  Parish Life Facilitators
  •  Economically challenged and rural parishes
  •  Local community outreach centers
  •  Family life and life issue ministries
  •  Catechetical and evangelization programs
  •  Technology and communications
Retired Priest's - Healthcare Assistance   $100,000
As the primary spiritual leaders of parish communities, our priests deserve support in retirement. The diocese is currently providing monthly pensions to 30 retired priests.  The Bishop’s Stewardship Appeal along with the Priest Retirement Endowment support priests in retirement and help pays their healthcare costs.
