May Procession

Since medieval times, the Church has combined the month of May with various religious devotions to Mary. May Crownings became popular in the USA prior to the Council of Vatican II.
At St. Mary's, each May a Statue of Mary is decorated with a wreath of blossoms to honor Mary's virtues.

Our ceremony starts with songs being sung during a procession from the main Church to the
Grotto at St. Mary's School. The procession is led by our Parish Priests, the Knights of Columbus, Legionaires of Mary, singers from the Schola Cantorum, and members of the Church, including our First Communicants. At the grotto, one of the First Communicants places the wreath on Mary's head..

A reception follows in St. Angela Hall. All Parishioners, visitors, and residents of Aiken are welcome and encouraged to participate in the May Procession.
