Introduction

The purpose of the Volunteer Formation Program is to assure that the theological-pastoral foundation and the motivation of the Volunteers in their evangelizing ministry are authentically spiritual (as distinguished from civic social work), Catholic (in accord with the Magisterium of the Church) and Eucharistic (“source and summit of the Christian life” LG, n. 11).

To achieve the goal of the Program’s distinctive character as spiritual, Catholic and Eucharistic, a 2-3 week study of the following is required.

I. Catholic Lay Spirituality

-Apostolic Exhortation, Christifideles laici, John Paul II, On The Vocation and Mission of the Lay Faithful in the Church and in the World

-Sacred Scripture (basic perspective)

-The Catechism of the Catholic Church (general overview)

II. Eucharistic Evangelization

-Encyclical Letter, Redemptoris missio, John Paul II, On The Mission of the Re- deemer

-Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii nuntiandi, Paul VI, On Evangelization in the Modern World

 -Eucharistic Scriptural Theology

III. History of Evangelization in the Diocese of Charleston

-Diocesan video Fire Tried Gold.

- Past examples of evangelization centered in Kingstree, SC

Note
The above Formation Program is required for both short- and long-term Volunteers. However, for long-term Volunteers there will be, in addition, continuing “formation days” once every three weeks
